Speaker: Elisabeth Limbeck – Lilineau
May 11th, 18:00 – Anca Poterașu Gallery, Popa Soare 26
This talk is organized by ARAC with the suppport of Austriac Cultural Forum
We will discuss art in technical museums following a lecture by Elisabeth Limbeck-Lilienau, Head of the Exhibitions Department at Technische Museum Wien, “Art & Science – Some experiments at the Vienna Museum of Technology.”
At first glance, a technical museum presents machines and objects related to the history of science, but the context of their production is not evident and, above all, visitors cannot see or engage with the people who worked with this equipment. The production process is not visible. This was the pretext, for example, for the permanent exhibition ‘AT WORK’, which presents the photographic testimonies of Romanian artist Iosif Király about industrial production processes.
(notes Elisabeth Limbeck-Lilieneau)
The event will take place in English, without translation, and is organized by ARAC, Anca Poterasu Gallery, and UNARTE Bucuresti, with the support of Austriac Cultural Forum.
What is the connection between art, artists, and a museum of science and technology?
At the Vienna Museum of Technology, we have been collaborating for many years with various artists to explore and make the exhibits better known, as well as to broaden the purely technical or scientific perspective of such an institution in an innovative way. Artists and designers specialize in the visual translation of complex subjects. Their point of view can be a highly innovative means of conveying contexts that cannot be seen, for example, in objects or artifacts.

At the same time, the exhibition The Danube explored this river—emblematic for Austria and for many other countries—from the perspective of the technical masterpiece it represents, with the museum’s archival documents complemented by the perspectives of two artists, Iosif Király and Sophie Ristelhueber.
